Renting a car in Cyprus – the freedom to explore the island

If you really want to get to know Cyprus, renting a car is the best option. The island has a bus service, but many beautiful beaches, monasteries and mountain villages are only accessible by car.

Driving in Cyprus – what to expect?

  • In Cyprus, people drive on the left side of the road, similar to the UK. However, most drivers get used to it after a few kilometres.
  • The roads are in very good condition and the motorways are free – there is no need to buy any vignettes or tolls.

Car rental – where and how much?

  • You can find the largest selection directly at the airports in Larnaca and Paphos, but also in the main tourist towns.
  • Prices start from €20-30 per day in the off-season, and are higher in the summer.
  • To rent a car, you need a valid EU driving license and usually a credit card as a deposit. The minimum driver’s age is usually 21 years (25 years for larger cars).

Traveling to the North of the Island

  • Most major international car rental companies do not allow you to travel to the North with your car. Insurance is only valid within the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.
  • However, there are smaller local companies that allow this. In this case, you need to buy special insurance for a specific car and driver directly at the border, which costs approximately €35 per month. Even so, it is always at your own risk and you need to take into account that the coverage is limited.

Why is it worth having a car?

With a car, you can enjoy Cyprus to the fullest – discover the secluded beaches around Ayia Napa, the mountain villages in the Troodos mountains or the historical monuments in Paphos.

A car gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace and avoid crowded bus lines.
